Computing network outages planned for August 13

From 6 a.m. to approximately 11 a.m. on Sunday, August 13, most central university technology resources will be unavailable while necessary upgrades are installed and system maintenance is performed. This includes the UST Network and Internet/Web, MyStorage, E-Mail, Blackboard, Network printing, Library databases, and more. Computer network outages planned, July 21-23

IRT has scheduled several upgrades and system maintenance events this weekend, starting on Friday evening, July 21.

MyStorage and Personal Web resources will be unavailable beginning 6 p.m. on Friday, and will be unavailable intermittently until late Sunday.
On Saturday evening (5 p.m. to 10 p.m.), several Banner-related systems will be unavailable, including Password Changing, New Accounts, and the People and Class Finders.
On Sunday morning (6 a.m. until noon), some university resources will be unavailable, including email, network printing, voicemail, and library databases.

IRT hopes that this scheduled outage will result in minimal, if any, incovenience. If you have questions, please call the IRT Tech Desk, 651/962-6230, or email IRTHelp@stthomas.edu.

In Memoriam: Jaroslav Pelikan (1923-2006)

Yale professor Jaroslav Pelikan, one of the world's foremost scholars of the history of Christianity, has died of lung cancer, his son said Monday. He was 82 years old. Mr. Pelikan wrote more than 30 books, using sources in nine languages and dealing with literacy and muscial as well as doctrinal aspects of religion. "For a man as talented and accomplished as he was, he was also exceptionally kind and genuinely humble," said his son Michael. From: Associated Press.

RefWorks Announces Direct Export from Google Scholar

Users of Google Scholar can now add citations from their searches directly to their RefWorks account, and so to their bibliographies. It's really easy - here is a short video tutorial on how to set this up.

RefWorks is a personal bibliographic software manager that is free of charge for all St. Thomas students, faculty, and staff. RefWorks makes managing bibliographic references easy and efficient, since users can either input citations manually or export citations directly from a number of the research databases at the UST libraries.

Valueline Subscription Upgraded

Great news for finance students! We recently upgraded our Valueline subscription to include historical reports. This includes past company reports from the Valueline Investment Survey back to 1997. The upgrade also includes reports on mutual funds, options, convertibles, special situations, and exchange traded funds.

Within Valueline, select the "Research Center" tab, and use the navigation buttons on the left side of the page to select the pieces you need.

New Resources for Industry Research and Media Planning

The libraries have recently subscribed to two new titles.

IBISWorld Market Research Reports provide in-depth industry analysis for over 700 U.S. industries at the five-digit North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) level of detail. Reports average 25-30 pages, are updated 3 times annually, and contain key statistics, market characteristics, segmentation, industry conditions, industry performance, key competitors, key factors, and industry outlook. (Note that UST does not subscribe to the linked industry risk, company research and economic/demographic information—this information is available from other sources).
SRDS Out-of-Home Advertising Source provides complete information on alternative media vehicles, organized into 20+ media categories. Listings contain standardized ad rates, dates, contact information and links to Web sites that provide additional facts on alternative venues. SRDS also includes information for consumer and business magazines, interactive advertising, newspaper, television and cable, direct marketing, and radio markets.

Music in the Library Honors the Patron Saint of Music

Music in the Library presents its 6th annual concert in honor of St. Cecilia, the patron saint of music, on Thursday, November 17, from 12:00 noon until 1:00 p.m., in the O'Shaughnessy ("leather") Room of the O'Shaughnessy-Frey Library. UST student guitarists, vocalists, instrumentalists, and the UST Gospel Choir will perform a variety of classical and gospel works in this free event. St. Cecilia, whose feast day is November 22, was a virgin saint and martyr of the early church and has been honored as the patron saint of music since the late 15th century. Sacred Arts Exhibit Panel Discussion on November 11

UST Libraries: Context, Assessment, and Planning

Two Bulletin articles focused on the UST Libraries and its recent self-study. The series is called "UST Libraries: Context, Assessment, and Planning." Part I discusses recent developments that will affect academic libraries, including Google Scholar, and describes the libraries' assessment project. Part II describes the findings of the assessment, and how the libraries plan to use these findings to shape future planning.

UST Digital Images are in Minnesota Reflections Digital Library

The University of St. Thomas Archives contributed nearly 40 digital images to Minnesota Reflections, the initial project of the Minnesota Digital Library Coalition. Ann Kenne, Head of Special Collections and University Archivist, selected the materials from the University Archives' collection of more than 20,000 historic photographs and postcards of the University of St. Thomas, the St. Paul Seminary, and the St. Thomas Military Academy.

The UST images document the faculty, students, sports, and activities of the college from its founding in 1885 through 1909. Catalogers Cathy Lutz and Jane Shriver were instrumental in the description of these images.

New Interlibrary Loan System Has Arrived

The UST Libraries introduce ILLiad, a new interlibrary loan system that will provide you with very detailed information about your interlibrary loan requests. In addition to the complete history of your interlibrary loan transactions, ILLiad actually gives you a window into the “behind the scenes” processing, so you are more informed about the current statuses of your requests. Most articles that you request will be delivered electronically. See ILLiad News for more information.

New Industry Research Database on Trial

The Libraries are currently running a trial of the IBISWorld Industry Intelligence database. It provides access to 680 separate industry reports (at the 5-digit NAICS code level) covering:

Industry Conditions, performance, and segmentation
Market characteristics
Competitors and market share
Statistics
Performance analysis

Show Up in the Library for the Show’d Up Band

Music in the Library opens its sixth season with a free concert featuring the Show’d Up Band on Thursday, September 29, 12 noon - 1 pm, in the O'Shaughnessy ("Leather") Room of the O'Shaughnessy-Frey Library. The Show’d Up Band, a traditional string band made up of UST faculty and staff, plays an eclectic mix of bluegrass, old-time, Irish, and other traditional music, all enhanced with sparkling repartee. Note that the Band normally is found in either the quad or Campus Square on Thursdays over the noon hour playing informal jam sessions – stop by and listen.

UST Libraries now have online access to CQ Weekly. This title now appears on the list of library e-resources, will be added to the A-Z list of journal titles, and will be added to the CLICnet library catalog in the near future. The libraries also have access to print holdings for 1998-2004 in their periodical stacks. Enjoy reading about the activities of government.

Media Resources Collection Has 22 Online Videos

The Media Resources Collection, a department of the O’Shaughnessy-Frey Library Center, announces that it now has 22 videos available online. These videos can be watched on your office, home, residence hall, or classroom computer. If you prefer to use the physical video, visit Room 309, O’Shaughnessy-Frey Library Center. New Database to Identify Business Journals

The libraries have added a new resource particularly useful to business faculty trying to identify important business journals in which to publish their research. Cabell's Directory of Publishing Opportunities - Business Set (UST users only) is a directory of over 1,180 journals in accounting, economics and finance, management, and marketing. Individual journal records (in PDF format) include contact information for each journal; information on the journal’s topical scope, peer review processes, circulation data, and acceptance rate; and manuscript submission guidelines.

Users can view an alphabetical list of all journals; select an index of topics to view journal titles, peer review indicator, and acceptance rate; or perform a filtered search according to pre-set criteria. (Thanks to John Heintz for the information!)

Blackboard and RefWorks Training in August

Faculty and Staff persons wishing to learn how to use Blackboard more effectively will have this slate of classes to choose from in August. New this session are the librarian-taught classes:

Introduction to RefWorks (the basics of using UST's bibliography manager software)
Integrating Library Resources into Blackboard (including online full-text articles in syllabi, linking to a RefWorks database in Blackboard, including other library content in course sites)

New netLibrary Titles Have Been Added to CLICnet Catalog

The Minitex Shared netLibrary Collection IV for 2005 has been added to the CLICnet catalog. The list of electronic books is currently sorted by call number for browsing. Also, Ireland Library has added a number of electronic books relating to theology.

The Library Web Chic (of SUNY Cortland) discusses library efforts to integrate library content into course management systems. "While libraries could create such pages on their own library website and IT staff to automatically create a dynamic link to this content for every course in the CMS, usability would suggest that it would more useful for the content be part of the CMS.
Irregardless of the existing technical issues, libraries need to work harder to get library content in the CMS/LMS. "
